The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the impoundment of a taxi suspected to have been used in a series of highway robberies within Kampala and its surrounding areas.
According to police, the vehicle, registration number UBL 572K, was intercepted in Masaka District and later escorted to Nateete Police Station to support ongoing investigations.
Preliminary findings indicate that the taxi was recently used in an incident involving a female motorist along the Northern Bypass near the Namungona Roundabout. Police say the suspects intercepted the victim and allegedly used deception to intimidate her, falsely claiming that she had knocked someone dead.
Investigators believe the suspects pressured the motorist into opening her vehicle, a tactic police say is part of a wider scheme aimed at stealing vehicles from unsuspecting road users.
In a statement posted on the official X account of the Uganda Police Force, authorities said that following the reported incident, security agencies launched a coordinated, intelligence-led operation to trace the vehicle. The operation culminated in the successful interception and impoundment of the taxi in Masaka.
Police are now working to formally record the victim’s statement to strengthen the evidentiary basis of the case. Investigators are also examining whether the taxi may be linked to other reported incidents of a similar nature.
The police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant while driving, particularly along major highways and bypasses, and to immediately report any suspicious encounters to the nearest police station or through established emergency lines.
Meanwhile, several Express Penalties Scheme (EPS) digital receipts have recently circulated on social media, allegedly issued to the same taxi along Masaka Road and in surrounding areas, a development police are also reviewing as part of the investigations.
